Former UTEP star and Olympic Medalist Obadele Thompson Writes on “Secrets of a Champion Student Athlete: A Reality Check”
Olympic Medalist Sprinter and former USTFCCCA Indoor Athlete of the Year Obadele Thompson has released his first book, “Secrets of a Champion Student-Athlete: A Reality Check”.
Thompson was never just an athlete. In addition to winning four NCAA sprint titles and eleven NCAA All-American honors while attending the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP), he was a Dean’s List student, a WAC Academic All-American, and a GTE First Team-At-Large Academic All-American (now called an ESPN First Team Academic All-American). Thompson was also inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma international honor society for top business students across the world. He capped his outstanding collegiate career by receiving the NCAA Today’s Top VIII Award in recognition of excellence in academics, athletics, and leadership. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in Economics and Marketing, Thompson remained one of the top sprinters in the world for almost a decade competing at many major championships.
In “Secrets of a Champion Student-Athlete” Thompson skillfully draws upon his experiences as a former champion student-athlete and professional athlete to create an easy-to-read “pocket mentor.” It is packed with hundreds of practical tips, “secrets,” and reality checks that student-athletes can use to maximize their potential and become winners in the classroom, on the field, and most importantly, in life.
“This book is a treasure for all student-athletes,” says Duke University head coach Mike Krzyzewski, “Obadele shares his wisdom on how to achieve excellence on and off the field.”
University of South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye says it is also “a great resource for coaches because it teaches our athletes how to identify and eradicate problems on their own so that in turn, we as coaches can have less stress professionally and in our personal lives!”
