

DIII Men’s Champ UW-La Crosse Sweeps Scholar Teams of the Year Among All-Academic Teams

NEW ORLEANS – Not only did the UW-La Crosse men sweep the NCAA Division III indoor and outdoor championships in 2013 in athletic competition, but the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday that they have also claimed Scholar Team of the Year honors for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Eagles, who finished the academic year with a 3.20 cumulative team grade point average, earned the honors as a result of being the highest-placing team with at least a 3.10 cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.
UW-La Crosse best combined academic achievement and athletic accomplishment among the 80 men’s teams that earned All-Academic team honors. A full list of All-Academic Teams can be found below.
The 2013 award marks the second time in the past three seasons UW-La Crosse has claimed both the indoor and outdoor Scholar Team of the Year awards dating back to 2011. This also marks the fourth time in the past six seasons the Eagles have claimed the award for their efforts during the indoor season.
Outdoors, the Eagles scored 66 team points to claim the title and edge out in-state rival UW-Eau Claire with 64. Isaac Vazquez brought home the squad’s lone event title, but the team as a whole turned in 13 scoring performances.
UW-La Crosse was in a class of its own at the Indoor championships, scoring 74 team points and claiming three event titles en route to a 34-point victory over UW-Oshkosh. In total, Eagle student-athletes scored in 12 events.
Cal Tech Posts Top Team GPA Among 80 All-Academic Teams
The USTCCCA also announced Tuesday the 2013 Division III All-Academic Track & Field teams. A total of 80 institutions earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or higher.
Cal Tech was the top team in Division III with a cumulative 3.53 mark, followed closely by Principia at 3.521 and MIT at 3.52.
Among conferences the MIAC boasts the largest number of All-Academic Teams with nine. The Northwest Conference is second with eight while the NEWMAC, NESCAC and WIAC are each represented by seven apiece.
