Division II National Coaches Polls Set Up Multiple Top-10 Tussles this Weekend

NEW ORLEANS –  The very top echelon of the men’s and women’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Coaches Polls, which were released Wednesday, remained unchanged this week but could be in line for a major shake-up after this weekend.

The top 10 women’s teams and the top four men’s teams held steady in the rankings, while the latter half of the men’s top 10 underwent minor changes. This weekend could turn those minor changes into major ones with multiple top-10 matchups happening around the country.

Both defending champions in the Adams State men and the Grand Valley State women remained unanimous No. 1 teams, but both will face their most difficult tests of the young season this weekend at the Roy Griak Invitational at Minnesota.

The men’s top five is completed by No. 2 Western State, No. 3 Grand Valley State and No. 4 Chico State — which remained stationary from a week ago — and No. 5 Augustana (S.D.), which moved up a spot since last week. Both GVSU and Augustana will join Adams State at Roy Griak.

Joining Augustana making one-position upward moves in the men’s top 10 are No. 7 Southern Indiana and No. 9 Edinboro, which is tied with Alaska Anchorage. Displaced one spot down by those moves are No. 6 Colorado Mines and No. 8 Missouri Southern. Colorado Mines and No. 2 Western State will square off at Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Shootout.

In the women’s polls the top 10 teams remained stationary, setting up a showdown between No. 1 GVSU, No. 2 Adams State and No. 3 Augustana (S.D.) at Roy Griak.

Western State and Alaska Anchorage held firm at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, to round out the top five. Right behind them in the polls are No. 6 Simon Fraser and No. 7 Chico State, which will both compete at the Stanford Invitational this weekend.

The biggest move in either poll was the Metro State men’s jump to No. 17 from unranked status a week ago, while No. 20 Southwest Baptist was the biggest gainer on the women’s side, up three spots from No. 23.

Metro State was the only new men’s team in the polls, while No. 22 Pittsburg State and No. 24 Dallas Baptist joined the women’s poll for the first time this season. Dallas Baptist shares the 24th spot with Cal State Stanislaus, which is returning to the poll after a one-week absence.
