DIII Rankings Home

The mid-point of the season is in the rearview mirror, and the run to conference and national titles are approaching fast. In this week’s release of national team rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), performances prior to this season have been “taken off the board”, leaving the only thing to count is the here-and-now which annually results in the largest moving week among ranking positions.

Due to the shift in what data is taken into the rankings computer plus stellar performances from the past weekend, two new No. 1s have emerged. Returning to No. 1 on the men’s side is North Central (Ill.). While on the women’s side, MIT takes the reins of No. 1 for the first time in the six-year history of the “computerized”-ranking system.

Coach Halston Taylor’s Engineers have been ranked No. 2 in the country for indoor track & field on six different occasions in the past six years, but they have never punched through to the top spot until this week.

Garnering 11 top-10 national performances this season, including three divisional leaders, MIT in the past weeks have positioned themselves for a strong postseason run. Sarah Quinn, Maryann Gong, and Christina Wicker sit 1-2-4 on the national mile list with sub-5:00 times. Gong also is No. 1 in the division currently and No. 4 all-time in DIII history at 3000 meters while Quinn is No. 4. Quinn also holds the No. 4 spot in the 5000 meters. The group also has combined for the No. 2 DMR performance in the division to this point. MIT also boasts the division-leader in the pole vault, junior Cimran Virdi.

MIT’s two-spot surge to the front of the table moves UW-La Crosse down to No. 2 this week. Illinois Wesleyan jumped two spots to No. 3 with triple-jump division leader Jill Harmon hitting a season-best this past weekend.

UW-Oshkosh is down two spots to No. 4 while Johns Hopkins went on an upswing to No. 5 in rising four spots.

St. Lawrence made the largest jump among top-10 teams, moving from 22nd a week ago to No. 8 currently.

In the biggest moving week to date, SUNY Cortland (No. 14), Emory (No. 16), Bowdoin (No. 19), Cornell College (No. 24), and SUNY Plattsburgh (No. 25) made jumps of at least 10 spots or more to join the top-25 ranks this week.

On the men’s side, the recapture of the No. 1 position by North Central bumped UW-Eau Claire to No. 2. UW-La Crosse and Mount Union is up-a-spot this week to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, while No. 5 UW-Whitewater was the victim of the leaping teams as they fell to No. 5.

Bridgewater State made a six-place jump to No. 6 while Widener was the eye-opener of the week, moving from No. 24 to No. 7.

Six men’s and six women’s teams from the WIAC are in this week’s top 25, leading both gender groupings among conferences.

In the latest regional rankings, Wartbug (Central) and North Central (Ill.) (Midwest) are the new No. 1 teams in their respective regions while St. Lawrence (Atlantic) and Emory (South/Southeast) are now the No. 1 women’s teams among their geographical peers.

The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 13-14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
