UW-Eau Claire Men Throw Themselves to No. 1 in DIII Indoor Computer Rankings

NEW ORLEANS—With Division III heating up, the men’s computer rankings saw a major shakeup at the top, while the top seven women’s teams stayed the same. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the rankings on Tuesday afternoon.

DIII Rankings Home

The men’s moves were major. Three pairs of top-ten teams flip-flopped in the rankings. New No. 1 UW-Eau Claire and No. 2 North Central (Ill.) traded places; so did now-No. 3 UW-Whitewater and No. 4 UW-La Crosse. The third duo to switch spots was No. 7 Haverford and No. 8. MIT.

The men of No. 5 Mount Union, No. 6 Central, and No. 9 Tufts held down their rank for the third straight week, and No. 10 UW-Oshkosh joins the top ten for the first time this season.

For the third straight week, the women’s top seven was ranked in this order: No. 1 UW-La Crosse, No. 2 UW-Oshkosh, No. 3 MIT, No. 4 UW-Whitewater, No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan, No. 6 Wartburg, and No. 7 Stevens Institute.

No. 8 Lehman joins the top ten for the first time ever, leapfrogging stalwarts No. 9 Johns Hopkins and No. 10 Baldwin-Wallace.

How did Eau Claire take over the top spot from North Central? The Blugolds only have 1.65 more points than the Cardinals do, so every tenth of a point mattered.

The biggest impact performance from the Blugolds this weekend came from senior thrower Roger Steen, who tossed the nation’s second-longest shot put throw of 2015.

The big man threw the heavy ball 17.58m (58-6.75) for the win at UW-Stevens Point.

As usual, the top five was mostly an internecine battle between WIAC squads. No. 3 Whitewater was able to beat out La Crosse for that spot on the strength of Stephen Sousa’s national-No. 4 heptathlon–also posted at Stevens Point.

The gap between the Warhawks and Eagles is nearly as narrow as the one between the Blugolds and Cardinals. Whitewater is only 1.76 points ahead of La Crosse.

The women of La Crosse tightened their stranglehold on the top spot this week, increasing their nation-leading total by 18.01 points. No one else in the top 25 bolstered their total as much.

No. 23 Chicago was the only women’s team to join the top 25 this week.

No. 8 Lehman added the second-most points to their total, largely thanks to a stellar 56.67 400 from sophomore Allie Bernasconi. Up seven ranks, the Lightning were the biggest mover of the week in the women’s top 25.

Lehman’s neighbor 35 miles to the north, Ramapo, had the most meteoric rise of any men’s team. The new No. 25 squad shot up 29 places in the rankings after first-year Jeremy Hernandez blazed a 1:50.83 800–just a few tenths from becoming one of the ten fastest indoor performers in DIII history.

Four teams took over as the new No. 1 team in their respective regions. (Teams’ order in the regional rankings can differ from the national rankings because the formula only considers athletes from each region; just like how the national rankings are an attempt to order teams how they would finish at a national championship, the regional rankings are ranking a mythical regional championship meet.) Those four new Nos. 1 are: the Widener men in the Atlantic, La Crosse men and women in the Midwest, and the Christopher Newport women in the South/Southeast.

The Division III team rankings will be released every Tuesday (except for next Wednesday, February 18) between now and the beginning of the NCAA Championships on March 13.
