NEW ORLEANS — No teams made more headlines at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships than the New Mexico women and the Syracuse men.

PAST WINNERS

WOMEN
2014: Michigan State
2013: Providence
2012: Oregon
2011: Georgetown
2010: Villanova
2009: Villanova
2008: Washington
2007: Stanford
2006: Stanford

The Lobos polished off a historically dominant season and took their rightful place on the throne, while the Orange shocked the nation and won their first title in 64 years.

It’s only right that New Mexico and Syracuse added another piece of hardware to their collection on Friday. The Lobos and Orange were named NCAA Division I Scholar Teams of the Year for the 2015 cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

In order to win this honor, New Mexico and Syracuse not only had to be the top finishing team for their respective gender at NCAAs but have at least a cumulative team GPA of 3.0. The Lobos own a 3.65 GPA, while the Orange posted a 3.112.

New Mexico was one of four women’s teams out of 205 that had five student-athletes named USTFCCCA All-Academic. Syracuse only had one, but senior Martin Hehir held it down for the Orange with a 4.00 GPA while majoring in forensic science.

PAST WINNERS

MEN
2014: Stanford
2013: Northern Arizona
2012: Oklahoma State
2011: Wisconsin
2010: Florida State
2009: Oklahoma State
2008: Iona
2007: Iona
2006: Iona

This is the first time that both New Mexico and Syracuse were named Scholar Teams of the Year. In fact, the Lobos are the first team from the Mountain West Conference to earn the honor. The Orange is the second team from the Atlantic Coast Conference with this distinction (Florida State in 2010).

The highest reported GPAs belonged to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men (3.785) and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women (3.83). The Mocs were one of two men’s teams above 3.7, with Bowling Green being the other. The Phoenix edged South Carolina for the top women’s team GPA by the slimmest of margins (.004).

See below for the full list of All-Academic Teams from the 2015 cross country season.
