CONVENTION: Coaches Tee It Up At USTFCCCA Golf Scramble
ORLANDO — A light fog gave way to a beautiful day at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club on Tuesday during the 2016 USTFCCCA Golf Scramble Presented by Accusplit.
While Opening Session serves as the official start of Convention, the USTFCCCA Golf Scramble is the first event. This marked the 11th consecutive year that the USTFCCCA Golf Scramble was held.
More than 90 coaches took to the 6324-yard course to play in a best-ball format. Prizes were given out to the top-4 teams as well as to contest winners for Closest To The Pin and Longest Drive.
The winning team on Tuesday consisted of Harvey Glance, Russ Rogers, Larry Shipp, Steve Simmons and Renaldo Nehemiah, the collegiate record holder in the 110 hurdles. Nehemiah set that record back in 1979. The group carded a final score of 15-under.
The runner-ups were Brandon Blanton, Jared Hartley and Todd Witzleben, who carded a score of 12-under. Blanton is currently a coach at Charleston Southern, while Witzleben is at Buffalo. Hartley works for MONDO.
Rounding out the top-3 were Michael Gusbeth, Matt Morris, Matt Sparks and Jason Zichterman. Gusbeth currently coaches at Elon University, Morris and Zichterman are at CSU-Pueblo, while Sparks is at Notre Dame.
Winners of the Longest Drive contest were Harvey Glance and Cheree Hicks, who is a coach at James Madison.
Winners of the Closest to the Pin contest were Michael Courtney, Art Kadish and Michael Porter. Courtney is a coach at Stephen F. Austin, Kadish at Quinnipiac and Porter at Clemson.
When Kadish picked up his prize, he jokingly asked, "You guys don’t need to see how I hit it there, right?"
Don’t worry, Art: This is a convention for cross country and track & field coaches — not golf coaches.
