NEW ORLEANSTiffin’s men’s squad made a big push into the top-5 of this week’s NCAA Division II Outdoor Team Rankings, as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday, but it was not enough to supplant the top-2 teams who have held strong through the first three weeks of the season.

Chico State and Ashland continued their stranglehold on the 1st and 2nd spots in the rankings, respectively, while Texas A&M-Commerce (4th) and Shorter (5th) each dropped a spot from a week ago.

Not a single one of Tiffin’s competitors from a week ago was laughing at the Dragons during the Otterbein University April Fool’s Invitational, where Jeremy Croy’s men pulled off 3 top-10 NCAA Division II marks among other solid performances. Senior Coy Blair led the way with an NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying mark in the shot put with a throw of 19.23m (63-1¼) that currently sits atop the descending order list. Dylan Cornwell (5.11m/16-9¼) and Cameron Burrows (2.10m/6-10¾) were sound in the pole vault and high jump, respectively, as each posted the 3rd-best mark in their event in NCAA Division II on the season.

While the Dragons were firing on all cylinders, so too were Chico State and Ashland.

Chico State benefited greatly from a pair of meets out in California in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational. In the former of the two, Kyle Medina (13:54.87), Will Reyes (14:01.50) and Connor Fisher (14:14.16) recorded the 2nd, 4th and 9th-best times in NCAA Division II this year in the 5000 meters, respectively. Derek Morton also flashed his skills in the 1500 meters, running at 3:46.81 for the 2nd-fastest time on the season by any NCAA Division II men’s athlete. The Wildcats field athletes were strong at the Stanford Invitational, led by Phill Bailey in the pole vault (4.90m/16-0¾).

Ashland got 5 top-10 outings out of its trip to the Miami Duals in Oxford, Ohio. Myles Pringle continued his torrid start to the season, running the 4th-fastest 200 meter time in NCAA Division II this year at 21.30. But it was the throwers who paced the way for the Eagles over the weekend, as Jordan Crayon hit an NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying mark in the hammer throw at 67.09m (220-1) that sits behind only his teammate, Daniel Roberts, in all of NCAA Division II this year. Bryn Campbell was right behind Crayon at the meet with a toss of 63.91m (209-8), good for 3rd in all of NCAA Division II, while Jason Zahn posted the 4th-best discus throw (54.10m/177-6) and the 10th-best shot put mark (16.74m/54-11¼) this year.

Texas A&M-Commerce was led at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays by Florian Obst, a freshman who recorded the top decathlon point total in NCAA Division II so far this season at 7235. Shorter posted some respectable marks at the Florida Relays, with DeAngelo Harris running the 4th-fastest time in NCAA Division II this year in the 400 meters at 47.09 Christian Smith recorded a 51.07 in the 400 hurdles – 3rd-best in NCAA Division II – while a quartet of Hawks posted the 2nd-best time in NCAA Division II in the 4×400 relay at 3:07.99.

Saint Augustine’s (6th), Academy of Art (7th), Adams State (8th), Central Missouri (9th) and Limestone (10th) round out the top-10. Adams State and Limestone each made tremendous leaps into the rankings, as the Grizzlies jumped from 52nd a week ago, while the Saints were just on the outside of the top-25 a week ago at 28th.

Five other teams made double-digit jumps this week in Lincoln (Mo.) (35th to 12th), Alaska Anchorage (26th to 16th), West Texas A&M (36th to 19th), Grand Valley State (42nd to 21st) and Western Oregon (88th to 25th).

The biggest leap of the week, however, belonged to Fresno Pacific who jumped from 129th to 20th, a whopping 109 spots.

The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
