Three Named High Scorers At DII Outdoor Championships
There was an abundance of outstanding performances as the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bradenton, Florida late last month.
However, none were as impressive as the outings by Albany State’s Cervantes Jackson, West Texas A&M’s Rellie Kaputin and Chadron State’s Mel Herl. The trio was named High-Point Scorers after winning a total of 4 national championships among them.
Jackson totaled 25 points for Albany State, while Herl and Kaputin each posted 22 points apiece for their respective programs.
Kaputin’s squad captured its 1st-ever outdoor team title, and much of that can be contributed to her escapades. Kaputin won the women’s triple jump title with a leap of 13.28m (43-7) while being the runner-up in the long jump (6.53m/21-5¼) to her teammates, Fatim Affessi. The Lady Buff wrapped up the meet with a 5th-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.71m (5-7¼).
Chadron State finished 6th at the meet with 29 points, of which all but 7 came from Herl’s performances. The thrower scored in 3 events, including a 1st-place finish in the hammer throw (65.27m/214-2). Like Kaputin, Herl was also a runner-up in one of her events, finishing 2nd in the shot put (16.15m/53-0) in addition to placing 5th in the discus throw (51.00m/167-4).
Jackson singlehandedly scored all of Albany State’s 25 points in Bradenton to lead them to an 8th-place finish. Jackson won both the high jump (2.16m/7-1) and the triple jump (16.30m/53-7¾) titles while also finishing 4th in the long jump with a mark of 7.60m (24-11¼).
