CONVENTION UPDATE: Track & Field Academy Courses Being Offered

NEW ORLEANS – Newcomers and veterans to coaching track & field alike can take advantage of the Track & Field Academy courses being offered at the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, this December.

Eight classes will be taught across four days at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa by some of the world’s best coaches and clinicians.

Please note that enrollment in the Track & Field Academy courses at the USTFCCCA Convention is a separate process and a separate cost from registering for Convention.

Six of the eight classes will take place between Sunday, December 10 and Tuesday, December 12, which is prior to and/or on the official December 12 start date of the USTFCCCA Convention.

The remaining two classes will be held between Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17, which is after the conclusion of the USTFCCCA Convention.

TFA Course 201: Track & Field Technical Certification

Dec. 10 (7:00 pm-10:00 pm)
Dec. 11 (8:00 am – 8:00 pm)

Course Fee: $135 if registered by Nov. 30
$155 if registered after Nov. 30

Course Information

A certification granting course covering training design and technical instruction in a variety of Track & Field event areas. Topics include training components, training design, technical instruction and teaching progressions in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500/1600, 3K/3200, 5K, 10K, 100/110h, 300/400h, Glide SP, DT, JT, LJ, TJ, HJ, PV, 4×100, 4×200, 4×400.

TFA Course 202: Track & Field Program Management Certification

Dec. 12 (8:00 am – 2:00 pm)

Course Information

A certification granting course covering all non-technical aspects of Track & Field coaching. Topics include ethics, roster management, budget, finance, equipment, academic monitoring, entries, eligibility, meet management.

TFA Course 307: Head Collegiate Coaching Certification

Course Information

A certification granting course that covers all key duties of a collegiate head coach including technical coaching, liability, philosophy and ethics, roster and staff management, meet management, finance, scheduling and travel management. Prerequisites for the course: 3 years formal coaching experience at the collegiate level, as well as certification from one of the following courses: 302, 303, 304, 305, 306, 310, 404, 405, 406 or 407.

TFA Course 310: Strength & Conditioning Coach Certification

Course Information

A detailed course covering all aspects of strength training, and other key athletic qualities. Successful completion of the course and its evaluations grants the Track & Field Academy’s Strength & Conditioning Certification. This course is open to anyone, and credit received for successfully completing the course is applicable to the Master’s Endorsement Program.

TFA Course 404: Meet Management for the Track & Field Coach

A course covering all aspects of meet management including facility use and preparation, timing, equipment, scheduling, intradepartmental relationships, and management of officials.

TFA Course 405: Sports Psychology for the Track & Field Coach

A course covering key psychological principles and skills applicable to athletic performance.  Topics include anxiety management, psychological skills, major meet preparation.

TFA Course 406: Injury Management for the Track & Field Coach

Course Information

A course covering various aspects of athletic injury applicable to the coach. Topics include the anatomy of common injuries, study of various sports medicine fields, applicable rehabilitation procedures, and altering training in the event of injury.

TFA Course 514: Master’s Endorsement in Combined Events

Dec. 16 (8:00 am – 8:00 pm)
Dec. 17 (8:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Course Fee: $225

Course Information

A high level endorsement granting course that covers coaching and preparation of Combined Event athletes at all levels. Topics include athlete management, training design and administration, competition management, technical issues and instruction, and sports sciences related to the Pentathlon, Men’s Heptathlon, Women’s Heptathlon, and Decathlon. Mentorship requirement attached.Prerequisites to take the Course: Courses 306, and three of the following: 401, 403, 405, 406, 407 or 310, 409.  Prerequisites for Certification: 6 Years formal Coaching Experience, Courses 306, 401, 403, 405, 406, 407 or 310, 408. Prerequisites may be taken in any order.
