2017 NJCAA Division I Cross Country National Awards

NEW ORLEANS – National Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2017 NJCAA Division I Cross Country season were announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

These awards are based on what happened both this past weekend at the 2017 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships and during the regular season.

National Men’s Athlete of the Year

Eric Fitzpatrick, College of Southern Idaho

Eric Fitzpatrick rallied in a big way to win the men’s individual title in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Fitzpatrick, a freshman from Boise, Idaho, trailed the leaders by seven seconds with less than one mile to go. That’s when Fitzpatrick dug deep and beat the talented field to the finish line by three seconds. He broke the tape in 24:45.0, 39 seconds faster than his previous 8K personal best. Fitzpatrick wasn’t a stranger to winning as a first-year athlete. He also posted wins at the Saint Martin’s Classic and the University of Providence Open.

National Women’s Athlete of the Year

Adva Cohen, Iowa Central

Adva Cohen broke it open early this past weekend and never looked back en route to the women’s individual title. Cohen, a freshman from Jerusalem, Israel, led by seven seconds at the two-mile mark and eventually stretched that advantage to 19 seconds by the end of the 5K race. This was her third consecutive win as she also posted victories at the Tori Neubauer Invitational and the Region XI Championships, where she set a championship record time of 17:22.1.

National Men’s Coach of the Year

Dee Brown, Iowa Central

Dee Brown led his team to a dominant win in the men’s race this past weekend. Brown, in his 14th year at Iowa Central, watched his squad roll up 65 points (2-3-15-18-27) on its way to a 47-point victory. The Tritons also won the Region XI crown. This is the second time that Brown has won this award.

National Women’s Coach of the Year

Dee Brown watched his women’s team cruise to the title this past weekend on its home course. The Tritons scored 52 points and put three runners in the top-15, led by individual champion and National Women’s Athlete of the Year Adva Cohen. Brown, in his 14th year at Iowa Central, also led his squad to the Region XI crown. This is the first time Brown has won this award.

The Bowerman Presentation
