NJCAA DIII Regional Award Winners For 2017 XC Season

NEW ORLEANS – Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2017 NJCAA Division III Cross Country season were announced Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as voted on by member coaches from that division.

The 2017 NJCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will be held November 4 in Westfield, Massachusetts.

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

CENTRAL REGION – SEAN SANAGHAN, HARPER COLLEGE
Sanaghan, a freshman from Prospect, Illinois, tied for the Region IV individual title this past weekend with a time of 26:35. He also ran well throughout the season and was named National Athlete of the Week several times.

EAST REGION – DANIEL TAYLOR, SANDHILLS CC
Taylor, a freshman, won the Region X individual title this past weekend. He was named National Athlete of the Week on September 25.

NORTHEAST REGION – ABSHIR YEROW, ONODAGA CC
Yerow, a sophomore from Nottingham, New York, won the Region III individual title this past weekend. He finished more than one minute ahead of the closest competitor.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

CENTRAL REGION – MISBAH BAIG, HARPER COLLEGE
Baig, a freshman from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, won the Region IV individual title this past weekend. She was named National Athlete of the Week twice this season, most recently on October 2.

EAST REGION – ABIGAIL STARKS, HOWARD CC
Starks, a sophomore from Marriottsville, Maryland, won the Region XX individual title and smashed the course record in the process. She crossed the finish line in 19:32.

NORTHEAST REGION – SHERRI METCALFE, SUNY ADIRONDACK
Metcalfe, a freshman, won the Region III individual title by nine seconds this past weekend. She beat two-time National Athlete of the Week Chyanna Bernier, who finished runner-up.

MEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR

CENTRAL REGION – JIM MACNIDER, HARPER COLLEGE
Macnider, in his sixth year leading Harper’s cross country programs, led his team to the Region IV title this past weekend. The Hawks are also ranked No. 1 nationally.

EAST REGION – PATTY RIVAS, RARITAN VALLEY CC
Rivas, in her fourth year leading Raritan Valley’s cross country programs, led her team to the Region XIX title this past weekend.

NORTHEAST REGION – MATTHEW FRENCH, SUFFOLK CC
French, in his fourth year leading Suffolk CC’s cross country programs, led his team to the Region XV title this past weekend, its third consecutive regional crown.

WOMEN’S COACH OF THE YEAR

CENTRAL REGION – JIM MACNIDER, HARPER COLLEGE
Macnider, in his sixth year leading Harper’s cross country programs, led his team to the Region IV title this past weekend. The Hawks are ranked No. 1 nationally.

EAST REGION – JEFF MOODY, SANDHILLS CC
Moody, in his first year leading Sandhills’ cross country programs, led his team to the Region X title two weeks ago.

NORTHEAST REGION – JOE PLUTZ, FIT
Plutz, in his third year leading FIT’s cross country programs, led his team to the Region XV title this past weekend in Milton, New York.
