2019 NCAA DI Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 2

NEW ORLEANS – No major changes befell the most recent NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index that was released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Eight of the top-10 teams remained in place from Week 1 – including the entire top-5 – as a weekend filled with competitions across the nation didn’t mean too many National TFRI-altering performances.

Like we just said, nothing changed in the top-5: Texas Tech is still No. 1, followed by No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 BYU and No. 5 Alabama. None of those teams added any new marks to their ledgers in the National Rating Index.

Further down the National Rating Index, Oregon and Florida State swapped spots. The Ducks jumped up to No. 7, while the Seminoles fell to No. 8. Jackson Van Vuren gave Oregon a slight boost thanks to a strong javelin throw at the Sun Angel Track Classic.

The first notable changes in the National Rating Index this week came in at No. 14 and No. 15, where Arizona and Stanford come in, respectively. The Wildcats and the Cardinal both jumped four spots from the previous week thanks to their efforts out west this past weekend.

Arizona hosted the Jim Click Shootout and Jordan Geist took full advantage of that home cooking. Geist usurped the national lead in the shot put with a mark of 21.28m (69-9¾). The Wildcats are also hoping for big things this year from Carlos Villarreal in the mid-distance events (800 & 1500).

Stanford took on rival California in “The Big Meet” and Liam Christensen shined. Christensen flung the javelin 74.78m (245-4) to move up to sixth in the TFRI Individual Rankings, which gave the Cardinal enough points to hurdle four teams since Week 1.

The newest addition to the top-25 this week is Purdue after an eight-spot jump. The Boilermakers, who leapt from No. 30 to No. 22, were paced this past weekend by their ninth-ranked 4×100 relay team and Isaiah Martin, who is now ranked 16th in the decathlon according to the TFRI Individual Rankings.

The biggest gainers between Week 1 and Week 2 were Missouri (up 28 spots), UMBC (up 25 spots), Idaho (up 23 spots) and Iowa State (up 22 spots).

Be sure to keep checking back as the National Rating Index will continue to evolve ahead of the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set to begin June 5 in Austin, Texas, on the campus of the University of Texas.
