2019 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Rating Index – Week 7

NEW ORLEANS – We are going to know which teams performed best in a national championship setting in two weeks’ time after the conclusion of the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Before then, however, we must look at the newest edition of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index that was released on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following a number of conference championship meets. This is the penultimate National Rating Index, as the final one of the season will be revealed next Monday.

Remember: The 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for May 23-25 at the SPIRE Institute.

The Men’s National Rating Index once again had a unique Wisconsin flavor.

That’s because three Wisconsin teams take up residence in the top-3 spots: No. 1 UW-Eau Claire, No. 2 UW-Oshkosh and No. 3 UW-La Crosse. The Blugolds held steady at the top, while the Titans and the Eagles swapped spots between Week 6 and Week 7 after the former added three top-10 marks to its TFRI ledger between Jackson Sheckler in the shot put, Jack Flynn in the discus and the 4×400 relay team.

UW-Platteville entered the top-5 for the first time since the 2016 season after an all-time effort by Zach Lee in the 1500. It was at the UW-La Crosse Eagle Open where Lee took over the national lead and became the eighth best performer in NCAA DIII history in that event with his time of 3:44.25. The Pioneers also received a strong mark from Ben Veverka, who is now ranked fifth nationally in the discus.

There was a trio of other big moves in the top-25: UMass Dartmouth jumped from No. 20 to No. 13 – its best rating since the preseason – after Jordan Entwistle captured the national lead in the javelin; Middlebury roared 15 spots from No. 30 to No. 15 behind the efforts of Nathan Hill (No. 2 in the 800) and its 4×400 relay team in the past two weeks; Gustavus Adolphus is the proud owner of its best rating in program history following Taylor Rooney’s national-leading effort in the 110 Meter Hurdles (14.09) this past weekend.

There is a new No. 1 team in the Women’s National Rating Index!

Loras took over the No. 1 spot in the nation for the first time in program history after a one spot rise between Week 6 and Week 7. It has been a meteoric rise for the Duhawks, as they were rated 35th in the preseason, No. 20 in Week 2, No. 9 in Week 9, No. 2 in Week 6 and now No. 1 in Week 7.

Bella Solis was the reason Loras usurped former No. 1 George Fox. Solis clocked the nation’s fastest time in the 400 Meter Hurdles (59.88), which gave the Duhawks a total of six national top-5 marks this late in the season.

Washington (Mo.) is hot on Loras’ heels, literally. The Bears hurdled three teams between Week 6 and Week 7 and only trail the Duhawks by 0.20 rating points.

If you’re wondering who propelled WashU, it would be none other than Heidi Nassos and Molly Shepherd. Nassos is now ranked second nationally in the pole vault and third nationally in the triple jump, while Shepherd moved up to fourth in the steeplechase.

UW-Eau Claire made its way to No. 6 behind No. 3 Williams, No. 4 George Fox (down three spots) and No. 5 Nebraska Wesleyan (down one spot). Tommie Brenner notched a national top-10 mark in the 100 Meter Hurdles to aid the Blugolds’ rise.

There were a few other notable moves in the Women’s National Rating Index this week: Dubuque went from No. 13 to No. 10, Wheaton (Ill.) went from No. 20 to No. 15, St. Thomas (Minn.) went from No. 30 to No. 18, while Rhodes Island College and Middlebury both vaulted into the top-25 at No. 22 and No. 24, respectively.
