NCAA DIII OTF National Athletes of the Week (May 21)

NEW ORLEANS – Athletes from NCAA Division III institutions, namely Jordan Leverette of Baldwin Wallace and Erica Oawster of UW-Eau Claire, took full advantage of their opportunities at Last Chance Meets around the nation last week.

Leverette and Oawster were named National Athletes of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.

Find out more about each of these athletes by clicking their names or by scrolling below.

National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to 10 collegiate outdoor track & field athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the two NJCAA divisions that sponsor outdoor track & field). The last release just goes to a pair of athletes from NCAA DIII for their performances at Last Chance Meets.

Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs. Nominated athletes are noticed before those athletes found through searching TFRRS.

The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.

NCAA DIVISION III MEN – Jordan Leverette, Baldwin Wallace

Senior | Sprints
Cleveland, Ohio

Jordan Leverette made the final regular season meet of his collegiate career count.

They don’t call them Last Chance Meets for nothing!

Leverette, who is a senior, took over the national lead in both the 100 and 200 thanks to his performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Final Qualifying Meet. He clocked a windy 10.38 in the 100 and a slightly windy 20.89 in the 200 to beat Deven Ward – who is now ranked fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 – in each race.

This is the second time this season that Leverette has been named National Athlete of the Week. He also earned the honor back on April 16.

NCAA DIVISION III WOMEN – Erica Oawster, UW-Eau Claire

Senior | Throws
Lino Lakes, Minnesota

Erica Oawster made some NCAA DIII history at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier.

Oawster, competing in the discus, became the eighth best performer in NCAA DIII history when she hurled the implement 51.19m (168-0). That came on her final attempt and gave her a near 14-foot win over the next closest competitor.

Want to know just how strong the WIAC has been historically in the discus? Like we said, Oawster is now the eighth best performer. There are five athletes who competed in that same league in front of her on the all-time chart.

This is the second year in a row that Oawster has been named National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season. She also earned the honor back on May 15, 2018.
