USTFCCCA Mourns Passing Of UCS CEO Jeff Schwartz

Jeff Schwartz, CEO of UCS, passed away early Friday morning surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Schwartz was a longtime supporter of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and brought on UCS as one of the initial sponsors who provided financial support for the Association.

“Jeff has long been a friend to – and champion of – track & field, and will be deeply missed by all,” USTFCCCA CEO Sam Seemes said.

UCS began as a manufacturer of custom awnings, boat covers and other canvas products in 1967, but made headway into the world of track & field after Schwartz saw a window of opportunity.

Schwartz created a portable pole vault pit and asked Bill Bowerman, the legendary coach at the University of Oregon, if he could display it at the AAU Championships, which would be held at Hayward Field. Bowerman agreed and not long after the meet ended, instructed Schwartz to leave the pit in Eugene, Oregon, and expect a check from the Oregon Track Club soon after.

From that day forward, UCS became an innovator, manufacturer and supplier of track & field equipment for our fine sport – all because of Schwartz’s entrepreneurial spirit.
