Discus Record Within Van Klinken’s Reach

No women in collegiate history have accomplished what Jorinde van Klinken of Arizona State did on Saturday at the USATF Throws Festival in Tucson, Arizona.

van Klinken, competing unattached, hit a fifth-round mark of 70.22m (230-4) for the best in-season discus effort in collegiate history, surpassing Meg Ritchie’s 40-year-old all-time collegiate best of 67.48m (221-5) by nearly nine feet. It was also a world-leading mark and a Netherlands national record.

Due to the exhibition nature of the meet – and the fact that van Klinken competed unattached – the mark won’t count toward the collegiate record book. Thus, Ritchie’s lofty standard remains in place – at least until van Klinken steps inside the cage in the upcoming NCAA postseason.

Just a few days earlier, van Klinken had another massive throw – 65.94m (216-4) – at the Tucson Elite Classic. That would have been the third-best mark in collegiate history had van Klinken competed attached.
