2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Postseason Awards

NEW ORLEANS — Postseason awards for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held this past weekend at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

USTFCCCA National Award Winners

National Men's Track Athlete of the Year

Chris Robinson was named the National Men’s Track Athlete of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Robinson, who hails from Tallahassee, Florida, was a prime figure in the Texans’ repeating as team champions in the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Robinson won the 600 meters in 1:16.99, moving to No. 5 all-time NJCAA regardless of track size. He added a runner-up finish in the 60 hurdles (7.87) before leading off SPC’s winning 4×400 relay team (3:07.68).

National Women's Track Athlete of the Year

Hilda Chebet was named the National Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Chebet, who hails from the Rift Valley, Kenya, scored 38 points in leading Iowa Western CC to a repeat team title at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Championships, winning the mile, 3000 and 5000 while adding a runner-up finish in the 1000. She moved into the all-time top-10 among NJCAA athletes in two events this year regardless of track size – the mile (No. 7 at 4:51.81) and 1000 (No. 8 at 2:51.93).

National Men's Field Athlete of the Year

Shakwon Coke was named the National Men’s Field Athlete of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Coke, who hails from Kingston, Jamaica, scored 18 points at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning the long jump with a PR of 7.83m (25-8¼), tying for No. 7 all-time in NJCAA history and the farthest since 2002. Coke’s win also made him the first-ever three-time NJCAA champion, having won titles in 2020 and 2021. In addition to his long jumping, Coke was runner-up at the NJCAA Indoor meet in the triple jump with a seasonal best of 15.53m (50-11½).

National Women's Field Athlete of the Year

Nia Robinson was named the National Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Robinson, who hails from Lucea, Jamaica, was omnipresent in field events at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She set seasonal bests in three jumps to score 20 points, taking the runner-up spot in the long jump (6.19m/20-3¾) and triple jump (12.60m/41-4¼) along with a fifth-place in the high jump (1.70m/5-7).

National Men's Coach of the Year

Erik Vance was named the National Men’s Coach of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Vance, in his sixth year as head coach of the Texans, led his team to a dominating victory at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as South Plains more than doubled up its nearest pursuer, scoring 140 points as second place tallied 62 in repeating its title from 2021. The Texans won seven events and scored multiple times in six events in addition to winning two relays.

National Women's Coach of the Year

Douglas Marshall was named the National Women’s Coach of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Marshall, in his fifth year as head coach of the Reivers, led his team to a second-straight team crown at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, scoring 160 points to win by a margin of 62. Iowa Western captured seven individual titles along with the concluding 4×400 relay crown. The Reivers scored multiple times in nine events, including 1-2 finishes in the 3000 and high jump.

National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year

Wesley Miller was named the National Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Miller, in his third year coaching the Texans’ sprints, hurdles, relays and middle distance, mentored his athletes to five wins at the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Texans’ dominance was most evident in the 400, 600, 800 and 1000, where South Plains had two of the top-6 in each event with eight different athletes. The Texans won event titles in five events that Miller coaches (400, 600, 800, 4×400 and 4×800).

National Women's Assistant Coach of the Year

Marc Bierbaum was named the National Assistant Women’s Coach of the Year for the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season. Bierbaum, in his fourth year coaching the Reivers’ distance runners, guided athletes to account for 59 points in just four events. None of his athletes was more successful than Hilda Chebet, who won three events (mile, 3000 and 5000) and added a runner-up finish in the 1000.
