2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field All-America
NEW ORLEANS – All-America honors for the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season were announced on Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Student-athletes earned First-Team All-America status by finishing among the top-8 of their events – including as a member of a relay – at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Oregon. Second-Team All-America honors went to those student-athletes who finished between ninth and 16th place.
Honorable mention went to those student-athletes who finished 17th through 24th in their respective events at Hayward Field.
Florida swept the national team titles, which was the first time that was accomplished by one program since Oregon in 2015. The national chomps brought back their fifth men’s team title and first women’s title in program history. Both teams held off strong challenges from Texas.
It should come as no surprise that both the Gators and the Longhorns were among the most honored programs with First-Team All-America honors, as those are the finishes that contributed to the all-important team scores. Florida’s men tied Texas for a gender-high 13 First-Team nods, while the Gator women earned the third-most First-Team laurels among their gender (Texas had 18, followed by Kentucky with 13 and then Florida matched Arkansas and LSU with 11).
Men’s programs from North Carolina A&T and Southern California were the only other programs with double-digit First-Team plaudits. The Aggies totaled 11 with the Trojans right behind at 10.
No athlete earned more First-Team All-America honors than Abby Steiner from Kentucky with four. Steiner starred in Eugene, Oregon, winning the 200 meters in 21.80, which set a collegiate record and was a world-leading mark. She also finished third in the 100 and was a member of the Wildcats’ title-winning 4×400 relay and runner-up 4×100 relay. Steiner brought Kentucky from fourth to first in the 4×400 relay with a 48.92 split (Alexis Holmes cruised home for the win).
All told, counting First-Team and Second-Team All-America laurels, 14 men’s programs and 13 women’s programs nabbed 10 or more. Texas led the way on the women’s side with 21, while Florida State, Ohio State and Texas tied for the most out of men’s programs with 16.
