Assistant Athletic Trainer

The Athletics Department and the Department of Sports Medicine at Oregon State University is recruiting for a full-time, 12-month, fixed-term Assistant Athletic Trainer position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Athletic Director.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing and coordinating athletic training services for Women’s Cross Country and Track student-athletes, maintaining electronic health records, coordinating care with team physicians, communicating with the coaching staff, assist in the management of facility inventory & supplies, and provide general athletic training services for OSU student-athletes as assigned. The Assistant Athletic Trainer reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and works clinically under the supervision of the Head Team Physician. The applicant must also demonstrate a commitment to promote and enhance diversity.
40% Team practices and game day events:
Ensure practice site/facility has the necessary supplies and equipment for student-athletes; includes water for hydration, cups/water bottles, ice for first aid, crutches, immobilizer, cervical collar, AED and portable oxygen, splints, padding, first aid supplies for cuts and abrasions. Maintain phone access list of special conditions among participating athletes in case of emergency and emergency contact for each student-athlete. Survey the practice site/facility to ensure safety. Remove dangerous objects. Notify appropriate personnel of repairs needed. Communicate each individual’s practice status each day to student-athlete and coaching staff. Observe practice drills, paying special attention to those with a known injury; respond to any injury situations.
Observe practice drills and advise coaching staff of potentially dangerous activities, or situations when an individual should be restrained from participation. Communicate regularly with the Director and Sports Physicians. Provide team practice supervision to student-trainers, making them aware of assigned responsibilities to keep the student-athletes hydrated, and to report any injury to the certified trainer.
30% Pre- and Post-Practice Treatments:
Apply various therapeutic modalities, instruction of range of motion and flexibility exercises (reduces possible swelling, reduce pain, and increase function). Apply necessary protection of injured area, including special taping or braces.
Follow up for team members requiring the strapping of other body part: wrists, fingers, thumbs. Clean and dress various abrasions, lacerations, etc to help prevent infection and to aid the healing process. Evaluate new injuries after practice is completed; dispense according to Standard Operating Procedures.
10% General Training Room Coverage:
Be available for the student-athletes so they may receive medical care without missing scheduled classes.
Rehabilitation: Instruct and supervise injured student-athlete in planned rehabilitation process that will enable them to regain normal function and abilities, following known guidelines for safe and efficient rehabilitation.
Treatments: Use various therapeutic modalities and exercises to help restore the injured body part to normal function as quickly and safely as possible. Educate student-athlete on exercises and treatment options for their benefit while at home or away from campus.
Evaluations: Take a history of the injury/illness (subjective data). Palpate the injured area for signs and symptoms of injury, assess active and passive range of motion, special tests to determine tissue disruption, etc. (objective data), make as assessment of the injury/illness, and determine if it is safe for the student-athlete to participate in the activities or make necessary referral to physician. Stock supplies as necessary.
5% Administrative Duties:
Act as direct liaison with Womens Cross Country and Track as directed; overseeing event coverage as well as specific injury care and treatment.
Coordinate pre-season physical examinations.
Scheduling with coaches/teams.
Summer mailing of medical forms to all student-athletes.
Maintaining of physical exam documents.
Scheduling of any follow up medical testing.
Maintain Athletic Training Room Medical Records.
Coordinate of Physician Coverage for assigned sports.
15% Supervision of Staff:
Provide Mentoring and leadership for assigned staff
Provide leadership, supervision and direction for assigned staff. Plan, assign and review work; establish goals for each position and assess performance through completion of evaluations; hire, train, promote employees; discipline or effectively recommend discipline up to and including dismissal; and address grievances, developing a framework for corrective actions as necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in athletic training or related field.
Current National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) certification.
The incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check and be deemed fit for duty at placement and while serving in the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience working in collegiate athletics is preferred.
Valid Driver License preferred.
