The Bowerman: Watching The Watch List (January 17)

You know the collegiate indoor track & field season is picking up steam when Arkansas, Clemson, Texas A&M and Texas Tech host meets on the same weekend.

From The USTFCCCA InfoZone: Meets & Results

That also means we could see some more debuts from those members of the Men’s and Women’s Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman, collegiate track & field’s highest honor.

Of those 20 athletes who appeared on the first Watch Lists of the 2020 campaign, four competed this past weekend: Trey Cunningham of Florida State, Johannes Erm of Georgia, JuVaughn Harrison of LSU and Samantha Noennig of Arizona State. Cunningham was the only athlete to take over the national lead in his or her event, while Erm, Harrison and Noennig all put in valuable work at the respective meets.

We’ll see two of those aforementioned athletes joined in action by four others, as six members of The Bowerman Watch List will be in action across the nation: Devin Dixon of Texas A&M, Harrison, Katie Izzo of Arkansas, Chris Nilsen of South Dakota, Noennig and Laulauga Tausaga of Iowa.

While there won’t be any head-to-head matchups featuring members of The Bowerman Watch List, we want to direct your attention to the Texas Tech-hosted Corky Classic as well as the National Pole Vault Summit, which will be held in Reno, Nevada.

Harrison returns to the site of where he had a breakthrough performance as a sophomore. It was in Lubbock at the Red Raider Invitational where Harrison cleared 2.27m (7-5¼), an all-conditions PR that would stand until he topped 2.28m (7-5¾) at the SEC Indoor Championships.

Then, in Reno, Nilsen could take advantage of some strong competition. Nilsen is looking to improve his indoor PR of 5.85m (19-2¼) that he established last year at the Drake Relays when the competition was moved inside due to inclement weather.

It wouldn’t be out of the realm to see some big marks from Dixon, Izzo, Noennig or Tausaga, either. Three of them will be competing at home (Dixon, Izzo and Tausaga), while Noennig travels 150 miles north from Tempe to Flagstaff to participate in the Lumberjack Team Challenge.
