Tennessee, Arizona State Tabbed as 2009 Division I Women’s Track and Field Scholar Teams of the Year
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday that the University of Tennessee and Arizona State University were selected as the 2009 Indoor Track and Field and Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Teams of the Year, respectively.
Tennessee, the 2009 Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year, capped a terrific indoor campaign in which the Lady Vols clinched the indoor national championship with two events remaining, to win its second NCAA Indoor title in the past five seasons (2005, and 2009) and third overall indoor national title. Prior to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships, the Lady Vols captured the SEC Indoor Track and Field title, winning the event for the third time in the last five years (2005, 2007, and 2009).
In addition to the Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year Tennessee, which maintained a 3.230 team cumulative GPA, 13 other programs with top-25 national finishes at the 2009 Division I Indoor Championships earned All-Academic Team honors for their academic and athletic achievements this season.
Arizona State, the 2009 Division I Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year, finished the 2009 track and field season with a third place showing at the Division I Outdoor Championships in June. The top-4 trophy finish marked the seventh time in the past eight NCAA track & field meets that ASU has walked away with a trophy. ASU finished third at the Pac-10 Championships and won the West Regional Championship for the second straight season.
The Sun Devils, last year’s Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year, maintained a 3.287 team cumulative GPA and are joined by 13 other schools that finished in the top-25 at the outdoor championships on the All-Academic Team list.
DIVISION I ALL-ACADEMIC TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS
In addition to the Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the women’s 2009 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Teams. A total of 131 Division I programs were recognized as women’s 2009 All-Academic Teams.
The University of Tennessee Chattanooga led all institutions with a 3.550 team cumulative GPA, followed by Butler University with a 3.547 team GPA.
The Big East led all conferences with ten teams selected as All-Academic Teams for 2009 – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Rutgers, St. John’s, Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, Villanova, and West Virginia. The Big 12 Conference was a close second with eight teams selected to the list. The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Mid-American Conference each had seven teams selected as All-Academic Track and Field Teams.
The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the respective Division I Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.
