UW-Oshkosh Men Take Over Top DIII Ranking; Wartburg Women Still No. 1
NEW ORLEANS – Following a showdown at the DIII Meet of the Week this past Friday, the UW-Oshkosh men’s team emerges atop the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) DIII National Computer Team Rankings released Wednesday, while the Wartburg women remain on top of the women’s rankings. The first regional rankings of the season were also released Wednesday.

UW-Oshkosh entered last weekend’s Cardinal Opener at then-No. 1 North Central (Ill.) as both the third-ranked team at the meet and in the division, but left with an important early-season victory over the top two teams in the division and the top-ranking in the country. Behind the power of strong field event marks this season – the Titans’ Nick Baatz, Pete Delzer and John McCann are atop the DIII rankings in the shot put, weight throw and high jump, respectively – UW-Oshkosh scored 147 to edge out No. 2 UW-La Crosse (142) and North Central (137).
North Central, the defending national champion, drops to third in the rankings, while UW-La Crosse remains at No. 2. UW-Whitewater and St. Thomas (Minn.) trade spots from the preseason rankings to round out the top five at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
The top three spots in the women’s rankings remain unchanged, with defending national champion Wartburg at No. 1, UW-Oshkosh at No. 2 and Williams at No. 3. Illinois Wesleyan moves up a slot to No. 4, displacing Methodist to No. 5.
The National Computer Team Rankings project how a team will finish in a National Championship Meet setting, rather than a triangular or dual. The rankings are compiled from meet data in the 2012-13 season, but also from returners from the 2011-12 to take into account what a roster might look like should all student-athletes perform at their top level.
The next round of computer rankings will be released January 30. The 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 8-9 in Naperville, Ill.
Biggest Jump (Men): 4 – Wabash
Biggest Jump (Women): 7 – UW-Stout
