DIII Regional Rankings Mostly Quiet; New England Reshuffles Again

NEW ORLEANS—Two weeks ago, New England was the stubbornly goopy cheese on the one slice that refused to congeal in an otherwise ready-to-eat pizza.  This week, with most teams idle, the entire pie was thrown in the freezer, with the men and women of Middlebury somehow keeping the freezer door stuck open.

The NCAA Division III Regional Team Rankings were released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

DIII XC Rankings Central

Seven out of eight men’s regions saw absolutely no change in their rankings; based on an impressive eighth place (first DIII team) finish NEICAAAs, the Middlebury men shot up five spots to No. 3 in New England.

Their female counterparts (also coached by Nicole Wilkerson) made the other big move in this week’s regional rankings, taking over the No. 1 spot in NE after beating MIT at NEICAAAs.

The only non-New England changes on the women’s side were 6-7 flip-flops in the Central and Atlantic. Macalester and Luther switched after the St. Kate’s Invite, while SUNY Cortland leapfrogged Vassar after a strong race at Carnegie Mellon.

A huge majority of regionally ranked teams were idle this past weekend; nearly all will race this upcoming weekend, with the biggest meets at UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse, and Oberlin.

NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held around the country Saturday, November 15.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region, or by a panel of coaches in the region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
