When Cristian Soratos of Montana State ran a 4:05.18 mile at nearly 5000 feet of altitude on a flat, 200-meter track that converted for NCAA qualifying to a top-ranked 3:56, the distance running community was abuzz with doubts.
None of those doubts remained past Saturday, as Soratos – donning his signature "Sonic the Hedgehog"-emblazoned tall blue socks – torched a 3:55.27 to win by two seconds at the Washington Husky Classic and without question take the top spot on the mile descending order list.
He joined the podcast to discuss that race, how the doubters have fueled him, and his drastic improvements over the course of the past five to five years. Just over three years ago, he was a runner trying to break sub-4 at 1500 meters outdoors, and now he’s currently the top seed heading into the NCAA Championships next month.
