DIII Regional Rankings Heating Up As Postseason Nears

NEW ORLEANS – There might only be one new No. 1 team in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Regional Team Rankings as released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), but a busy weekend meant lots of shifting elsewhere in the rankings.

The Williams College men took over the top spot in the New England Region, which was previously held by Amherst College. This past weekend, the Ephs beat the Lord Jeffs in a head-to-head matchup at the Little 3 Championships.

Outside of Amherst falling one spot, there are five other teams that are now ranked No. 2 in their respective regions including two in the Central Region – the Central (Iowa) men and the St. Thomas (Minn.) women. The others are the Calvin women (Great Lakes), the RIT women (Atlantic) and the Rhodes men (South/Southeast).

The most change by region occurred in the Atlantic Region for the men and Great Lakes Region for the women.

Starting with the Atlantic, TCNJ (formerly No. 5, now No. 3), NYU (formerly No. 7, now No. 4) and Ramapo (formerly No. 9, now No. 5) all made considerable jumps. The trio of RPI, Hamilton and Rowan – the 3-4-5 from last week – each shifted down three spots.

Then in the Great Lakes Region, it was already mentioned that the Calvin women moved up from No. 3 to No. 2. But Case Western Reserve (formerly No. 9, now No. 3) and Ohio Wesleyan (formerly No. 6, now No. 4) also improved over the course of a week. Falling in that region were Otterbein (from No. 2 to No. 7) and Mount Union (No. 5 to No. 10.

What happened elsewhere? Well, there are 21 new additions to the poll.

  • Central Region – Gustavus Adolphus women coming in at No. 8.
  • Great Lakes Region – Oberlin women at No. 5; Hope men at No. 10.
  • Mideast Region – Misericordia men at No. 8.
  • Midwest Region – Illinois Wesleyan women at No. 8; UW-Stout men at No. 10.
  • New England Region – Connecticut College men at No. 9, Bowdoin women at No. 10.
  • South/Southeast Region – Centre men (No. 9), Roanoke men (No. 10); Roanoke women (No. 8) and the Berry women (No. 10).

The NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held across the nation on Saturday, November 14. Then one week later, the national meet will be held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnerconne, Wisconsin.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
