Very Few Changes to DIII Regional Team Rankings

Very Few Changes to DIII Regional Team Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – As the NCAA Division III Cross Country postseason nears, teams are resting up in anticipation of putting on a show in the final month of competition. Thus, last week was a light one across the national landscape and there were minimal changes to the National Team Rankings as released Tuesday afternoon by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Nine of the 16 combined men’s and women’s regions went untouched with teams still in order from No. 1 through No. 10. Those regions were the Atlantic (women), Central (men), Great Lakes (men, women), Midwest (men, women), South/Southeast (men) and West (men, women).

The most movement happened in the women’s poll in the New England Region and the South/Southeast Region.

This past weekend was the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Cross Country Championships. Five of the top-10 teams from the New England Region were in action. MIT ended up as the top team out of the region and went from No. 3 into a tie for second (Tufts). Brandeis and Wellesley both had strong showings and moved up one (No. 6 to No. 5) and three spots (No. 9 to No. 6) from last week.

The biggest mover in the South/Southeast Region was that of Washington and Lee. After a fourth-place finish at the Carnegie-Mellon Invitational, Washington and Lee went from seventh to fifth in its region.

Over in the men’s poll, the Atlantic Region saw two teams soar three places from last week – Hamilton and Rowan. Hamilton took home the team title at its own meet and went from No. 7 to No. 4. Rowan didn’t race and went from No. 8 into a tie for fifth.

This weekend will be a busy one as there are two big meets on the docket – the Inter-Regional Border Battle hosted by Rowan and the Brooks AAE Invitational, which will serve as DIII Pre-Nationals.

The NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held across the nation on Saturday, November 14. Then one week later, the national meet will be held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnerconne, Wisconsin.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
