Division I ITF Season Starts In Earnest This Weekend

NEW ORLEANS — Business is about to pick up in NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field.

If last weekend’s slate was an appetizer, we’re about to get the first serving of the main course.

Many of the men’s and women’s teams that were featured in the top-25 of the preseason edition of our National Team Computer Rankings will be in action this weekend.

That also means that many of the student-athletes on the Bowerman Watch List, for both the men and women, will compete.

This weekend, however, won’t hold a candle to the one coming up in eight weeks’ time. That’s when the best of the best will converge on the Crossplex Arena in Birmingham, Alabama from March 11-12 for the 2016 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.

UAB Blazer Invitational: Both of Georgia’s ranked teams (No. 2 women, No. 6 men) will compete, as will both of its Bowerman Watch List candidates Maicel Uibo (60 hurdles, pole vault) and Keturah Orji (long jump).

KSU-KU-WSU Showdown: The fourth-ranked Kansas State women, along with Bowerman Watch List candidate Akela Jones, will compete in this tri-meet.

National Pole Vault Summit: Tennessee’s Jake Blakenship will compete at this two-day event in Reno, Nevada starting Friday, January 15.
