Lead For One Top-Ranked NJCAA DI Team Shrinks
NEW ORLEANS — For the third consecutive week, the Iowa Central men and the Central Arizona women sit atop the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Team Computer Rankings.
|
In the most recent rankings that were released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the Tritons still held a commanding lead over South Plains. Over in the women’s rankings, New Mexico JC is closing in on the Vaqueras.
Starting with the women’s ranking first, Central Arizona tallied 613.38 points this week. That constituted a 2.19-point drop, while the T-Birds added 53.78 points to their total to give them 599.33 and swing by Iowa Central for second. Now that’s only a 14.03-point advantage for the Vaqueras, compared to a 176-point edge in Week 1.
New Mexico JC’s jump can be accredited to the performances of its heptathletes (Latavia Coombs, Taneika Elliston and Abbigale Butler) and Christine Moss, who is now No. 1 in the 200.
Falling in behind Central Arizona, the Thunderbirds and Tritons is fourth-ranked South Plains, fifth-ranked Barton County CC, sixth-ranked Coffeyville CC, seventh-ranked Monroe, eighth-ranked Butler (Kan.) CC, ninth-ranked Pima CC and 10th-ranked Iowa Western CC.
Little changed in the men’s rankings, especially in the top-10. Every team from top-ranked Iowa Central to ninth-ranked Mesa CC remained in place. Last week’s No. 15 team Hinds CC surged five spots to No. 10, though.
The Eagles had two hurdlers — Christian Boyd and Craig Rock Jr. — step up in a big way this past weekend. Boyd and Rock are now ranked second and fourth in the 400 hurdles, respectively.
There were a total of four additions to the top-25 spanning both rankings this week. In the women’s rankings, Johnson County CC (No. 29 to No. 18), Meridian CC (No. 26 to No. 24) and Arkansas Baptist (No. 28 to No. 25) joined the lot, while the Johnson County men came in at No. 25.
The NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held May 17-19 in Levelland, Kansas.
