Arkansas Women Win 2016 NCAA DI Championship Team Title
EUGENE, Oregon — Two years ago, Dominique Scott-Efurd closed out Arkansas’ first women’s team title in any sport when she won the 3000 at the 2014 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Scott-Efurd found herself in the closer’s role once again Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field during the 5000 with the Razorbacks needing a win to clinch another crown.
Just like she did in 2014 and most recently on Thursday in the 10000, Scott pulled away late and sent Arkansas to its second national title.
“That’s what kind of brought the tears on ESPN,” Scott-Efurd said. “Just to be able to finalize and seal the deal on both of those — it’s incredible.”
The Razorbacks totaled 72 points across 21 events thanks to three individual champions and three runner-up finishes. Oregon took second with 62 points, Georgia was a distant third with 41 and Texas rounded out the podium with 36.
“I thought it would take high 50s, maybe 60 to win,” Arkansas coach Lance Harter said. “Obviously Oregon threw that up, but 70 was beyond our wildest dreams.”
Scott-Efurd and Lexi Weeks brought individual titles back to Fayetteville, while Jessica Kamilos (steeplechase) and Taylor Ellis-Watson (400) took second in their respective events. The Razorbacks’ 4×400 team also added eight points to their overall total.
