National Athletes of the Year Announced For NCAA Division III Outdoor T&F

NEW ORLEANS — Following the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships this past weekend in Waverly, Iowa, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday this season’s National Athletes of the Year.

Salisbury’s Luke Campbell and Stevens’ Amy Regan were named the Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Year, respectively, while North Central (Ill.)’s Luke Winder and Carleton’s Amelia Campbell each garned their gender’s Field Athlete of the Year honors.

The winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

LUKE CAMPBELL, SALISBURY

Campbell, a senior from Brunswick, Maryland, won a pair of NCAA Division III national titles in the 110-meter hurdles (13.93) and in the 400-meter hurdles (50.52). He also ran a leg of the eighth-place 4×400 relay. During the regular season he was first and second nationally in those two hurdles events, respectively. Campbell was named the CAC Athlete of the Year.

WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

AMY REGAN, STEVENS

Regan, a junior from Green Brook, New Jersey, won a pair of NCAA Division III national titles at 5000 meters in 16:27.32 and at 10,000 meters in 35:46.27. During the regular season she ran 34:09.44 for 10000 meters and recorded the eighth fastest time in the history of the Carnival. That mark left her No. 1 in DIII by nearly one minute. She was also No. 3 at 5000 meters with her time of 16:35.07.

MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

LUKE WINDER, NORTH CENTRAL (ILL.)

Winder, a sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, won his second consecutive NCAA Division III national title in the pole vault with a first-attempt clearance at 5.30m (17-4½). During the regular season, he became the No. 1 pole vaulter in DIII history following his clearance of 5.51m (18-1) at the CCIW Championships. Winder vaulted 17 feet or better in each of his outdoor competitions.

WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

AMELIA CAMPBELL, CARLETON

Campbell, a senior from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, won the NCAA Division III national title in the heptathlon with a score of 5108 points. During the regular season, she was ranked No. 1 in DIII in the heptathlon at 5058 points. Campbell scored 37.5 points at the MIAC Championships and was named Field Athlete of the Meet.
