What to Watch: Collegians in Day Four of #Rio2016 T&F
NEW ORLEANS – Keturah Orji came close yesterday, but will Monday be the day that collegians break through for a medal at these 2016 Rio Olympic Games?
Orji was just three centimeters shy of the bronze in the women’s triple jump with a new American record 14.71m leap, and three also happens to be the number of collegians who have shots at medals today.
Two-time NCAA champion DeAnna Price of Southern Illinois (USA) takes on the world’s best in the women’s hammer throw final starting at 9:40am ET after finishing ninth in the qualifying round this past weekend.
A reminder: Orji was seeded 12th after the qualifying round before finishing fourth yesterday.
Just over half an hour later, NCAA Champion and collegiate record-holder Courtney Frerichs of New Mexico (USA) takes the track for the women’s steeplechase final. That race goes off at 10:15am ET.
Fast forward more than 11 hours and Clayton Murphy of Akron (USA) will be attempting to get a medal in the men’s 800-meters final at 9:25pm ET. He’s won at everything he’s done this year: NCAA Indoor 800 title, NCAA Outdoor 1500 title and USA Olympic Trials 800 title.
Will a Rio 2016 medal be next on that list of accomplishments?
Beyond the finals on tap for today, 19 more collegians look to advance to finals of their own.
Oregon’s football/hurdling sensation Devon Allen (USA) takes the track for the first time in the 110-meter hurdles heats. His first race at 7:40pm ET will come after Allen claimed a pair of NCAA titles and the USA Olympic Trials crown in this event earlier this year.
Keep an eye on the discus, too, as five collegians who have thrown farther than 60 meters will be vying for finals berths. Among them are reigning NCAA champ Kelsey Card of Wisconsin (USA) and two-time NCAA champ Shelby Vaughan of Texas A&M (USA).
