NCAA DII Men’s National Coaches’ Poll Shifts After Griak

NCAA DII Men’s National Coaches’ Poll Shifts After Griak

NEW ORLEANS – While certainly not as eventful as last week’s NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll, this week’s edition has its fair share of changes – mostly as a result of the Roy Griak Invitational.

Each of the top six teams in the poll announced Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) remained stationary from a week ago, but several other teams farther down the top-25 list made big moves after big weekends in Minnesota.

Defending national champion No. 1 Colorado Mines remained atop the poll with seven first-place votes, while Grand Valley State checked in once again at No. 2 with the remaining first-place nod.

Rounding out the top-six were No. 3 Adams State, No. 4 Chico State, No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona and Griak Champion No. 6 Augustana (S.D.).

While the Griak-winning Vikings weren’t able to move up, the two teams directly behind them in the standings did make significant gains.

Runner-up UC San Diego jumped up seven spots to No. 14, while third-place Black Hills State went from receiving votes outside the top-25 all the way to No. 17. That mark is tied for the highest in program history; the Yellow Jackets were also No. 17 last year in week five.

The Les Bolstad Golf Course wasn’t as kind to fifth-place Western Washington and sixth-place MSU Moorhead, however. The Vikings dropped seven spots to No. 21, while the Dragons fell six to No. 24.

Also new to the poll this year was No. 23 Bentley. Coming off a win at the Trevecca Nazarene DII Showcase Invitational, the men made their highest appearance in the poll since week seven of the 2012 season.
