NEW ORLEANS – NAIA powerhouse Indiana Tech remained in the top spot in the both the men’s and women’s for the third-straight week this season, while there were few changes in the top-5 in both NAIA National Team Rankings released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released on Wednesday.
The Warriors’ Kejavon Moore notched a 22.10 in the 200 – good for 3rd in the NAIA on the year – at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic, while Deshawn Woods posted a time of 8.23 in the 60 hurdles for 6th in the NAIA on the men’s side. Only the distance medley team on the women’s squad recorded a top-10 mark in the NAIA on the season this past weekend, as the quartet recorded a time of 12:24.97 to rank 4th.

With so few top-10 marks over the weekend, Indiana Tech dropped points in the Computer Rankings, but still holds a commanding lead in the totals on both sides. Doane (Neb.) jumped to second in both polls, up from third in the men’s side and from fourth on the women’s side. For the men, Zach Brittain posted a mark of 17.32m (56-10) in the shot put at the Fred Beile Track Classic, good for first in the NAIA.
Siena Heights (Mich.), whose men’s and women’s teams both ranked second last week, fell to third in both polls.
On the men’s side, Wayland Baptist (Texas) and Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) remained in fourth and fifth. Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) has ranked fifth in all three NAIA polls this season, marking the highest spot in program history.
Hastings (Neb.) dropped one spot to fourth in the women’s poll, while Wayland Baptist (Texas) jumped three spots to fifth.
In both polls, there were very few large jumps, as only five teams in the top-25 that moved up four spots or more on the men’s side. Marian (Ind.) moved up five spots to ninth, cracking the top-10 for the first time on the season. Dordt (Iowa) jumped four spots to 13th, tying the best ranking in program history. Tennessee Wesleyan posted a whopping 46-spot jump from 64th to 18th, marking the single-largest jump into the top-25 in the NAIA on the season. Taylor (Ind.) moved up seven spots to 19th, and Carroll (Mont.) crept into the top-25 for the first time since the third week of the 2016 season with an 18-spot jump to 25th.
The women’s side was far less dramatic, as only two teams saw increases of four or more with Carroll (Mont.) moving 12 spots to seventh and Westmont (Calif.) jumping 10 spots to 11th. As a matter of fact, more teams in the women’s poll fell four or more spots, as Friends (Kan.), Cornerstone (Mich.), Davenport (Mich.), St. Francis (Ill.), Oklahoma City and MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) all saw slight plummets in the rankings.
The 2017 NAIA Track & Field Championships are right around the corner, as they will be held March 2-4 on the campus of East Tennessee State University. The rankings are bound to change between now and then, so be sure to check www.USTFCCCA.org for updates.
