NJCAA ITF National Rankings Fluctuate In Week 4
NEW ORLEANS — As of Friday, there are just two weeks until the start of the 2017 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. They’re slated to begin March 3 and run through March 4 in Pittsburg, Kansas on the campus of Pittsburg State.
If the meet was held today, the Iowa Central men and the New Mexico JC women would be favored to walk away with their gender’s respective team trophies as they’re the top-ranked teams in the most recent NJCAA National Team Computer Rankings that were released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Tritons actually strengthened their lead over No. 2 South Plains (Texas). Iowa Central increased its point total by 33.03 points, while the Texans lost 18.04 points.
Cloud County (Kan.) CC jumped two spots in the rankings from No. 5 to No. 3 following a 15.32-point jump. The Thunderbirds were propelled forward by Moses Dirane’s effort in the 800 (3rd in NJCAA) and the DMR which is now ranked No. 1.
Barton (Kan.) CC and Butler (Kan.) CC both shifted down one spot to accommodate Cloud County CC’s rise in the rankings.
A new addition to the top-10 was that of Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC. The Pumas went from No. 13 to No. 9 and will continue to be led by top-ranked heptathlete Connor Williamson and several strong distance runners.
Over in the women’s rankings, 2nd-ranked Iowa Central gained ground on New Mexico JC, but not as much as 3rd-ranked South Plains (Texas) did. The Texans jumped 59.24 points thanks to Natassha McDonald’s NJCAA-leading time in the 400 (55.30) as well as a few top-5 marks, namely in the 800 (Hellen Maasotuo) and throws (Kiona Bradshaw in the shot put).
No team gained entry into the top-5 as Barton (Kan.) CC and Iowa Western CC shifted to let Iowa Central and South Plains (Texas) make their move.
Six women’s teams jumped three or more spots from Week 3 to Week 4: Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC went from No. 12 to No. 9, Highland (Kan.) CC went from No. 16 to No. 13, Cloud County (Kan.) CC went from No. 17 to No. 14, Allen (Kan.) CC went from No. 21 to No. 18, Dodge City (Kan.) CC went from No. 27 to No. 23 and Harper (Ill.) went from No. 29 to No. 25.
We’ll have two more sets of rankings before the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships begin in about two weeks’ time.
