NEW ORLEANS — For the 6th-consecutive week, Chico State held down the top spot in the NCAA Division II Men’s Computer Team Rankings, released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday, but Adams State is hot on the Wildcats’ heels.
Both teams gained points on the week, with Chico State’s Kyle Medina running the 3rd-best time in the 1500 meters on the season at 3:44.07 this past weekend at the Stanford Cardinal Classic. But the Grizzlies of Adams State’s total of 14.83 pushed them closer to the top than they’ve been all season.

Austin Anaya notched an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark in the 1500 meters, recording the 2nd-fastest time in the country at an altitude-converted 3:43.35 at the Western State Invitational. Couple that with 2 altitude-converted top-30 performances from Micah Ballantyne in the 100 meters (10.49) and 200 meters (21.23), and the Grizzlies continued to rise in the rankings after starting the season at 52nd.
Following the 2 aforementioned programs, there was some shakeup in the top-10, as Shorter made a 7-spot leap to 4th.
The Hawks finished 2nd at the Gulf South Conference Outdoor Championships, but saw 5 top-10 descending order list marks set at the meet. Lester Miller laid claim to 2 of those, running a wind-aided 10.28 in the 100 meters (2nd in NCAA Division II) and a 20.85 in the 200 meters (3rd). Jonathan Ross added the 3rd-best mark in the 110 hurdles at 13.86, while Wake Roberds ran a 52.29 in the 400 hurdles, good for 10th. The Hawks 4×100 relay team also posted the 2nd-fastest time in the country at 40.31.
Shorter was the only team other than Adams State to climb in the top-10. Ashland (3rd), Tiffin (5th), Saint Augustine’s (6th), Lincoln (Mo.) (7th) and Grand Valley State (8th) all fell 1 spot each from a week ago, while Angelo State (10th) dropped 2 spots. Missouri Southern stayed stagnant in 9th place.

Texas A&M-Commerce dropped out of the top-10, falling 1 spot to 11th.
West Texas A&M rose 3-spots after falling out of the top-10 a week ago. Todd Handley posted an altitude-converted 10.40 in the 100 meters to place 11th on the descending order list.
Four other programs made 2-spot increases in the rankings from a week ago in Fresno Pacific (17th), Eastern New Mexico (21st), Johnson C. Smith (23rd) and CSU-Pueblo (24th).
Returning to the top-25 after falling to 31st a week ago was Mount Olive. The Trojans’ 6-spot jump can be attributed to the performance of Jonathan Dahlke at the Duke Invitational this past weekend, where his time of 14:01.10 in the 5000 meters placed him at 6th on the NCAA Division II descending order list.
The 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from May 25-27. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
