NEW ORLEANS – There are just two weekends left until the 2017 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships take place in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Between now and then, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will have three more rankings – including this one – for athletes, coaches and fans to sink their teeth into so they can prepare for another exciting championship season.
QUICK LINKS: Men’s Rankings | Women’s Rankings
Not too much changed between Week 5 and Week 6 in the men’s rankings as the top-7 remained the same for the 2nd week in a row. Indiana Tech is still the overwhelming favorite with 473.37 points (up 20.35 from last week) followed by 2nd-ranked British Columbia, 3rd-ranked Wiley (Texas), 4th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas), 5th-ranked Doane (Neb.), 6th-ranked Concordia (Neb.) and 7th-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
The biggest jump of any men’s team in the rankings belonged to Siena Heights (Mich.) as it went from No. 13 in Week 5 to No. 8 in Week 6. The Huskies received strong efforts from the likes of Torin Anderson (now ranked 6th nationally at 400 hurdles) and Devonte Johnson (now ranked 4th nationally in the pole vault).

Over in the women’s rankings, the top-3 remained the same as Wayland Baptist (Texas) still holds a 96-point lead over Indiana Tech. Concordia (Neb.) follows both of those teams, while Doane (Neb.) moved up to 4th after holding down 6th last week.
There were two new additions in the women’s top-10 in Week 6 – No. 9 Siena Heights (Mich.) and No. 10 Aquinas (Mich.). The former was propelled by Asia Gardner’s effort in the 100 (now ranked 5th nationally) and Marissa Johnson’s clearance in the high jump (now ranked 3rd nationally at 1.74m/5-8½). The latter brought home two top-5 marks in the 100 hurdles thanks to Alex King (2nd, 14.13) and Tori Desira (5th, 14.22).
Looking further down either set of rankings we find two teams joined the top-25 for the first time this week and that’s the men of Northwestern (Iowa), who are ranked 25th, and the women of Dordt (Iowa), who are ranked 20th.
The next NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Team Computer Rankings come out May 17, followed by the final batch on May 23 in anticipation of the national championships. Be sure to check back on USTFCCCA.org throughout the month to find out how they shake out.
