NEW ORLEANS — Not much changed from week 4 to week 5 in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Team Rankings, released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as the top-4 men’s teams and top-8 women’s teams held their ground from a week ago.

The Iowa Central CC men’s squad and New Mexico JC women’s team remained atop the rankings once again, followed by a slew of familiar teams. The bottom half of the men’s rankings saw some movement while the 9th and 10th spots on the women’s side flip flopped in what was the only change from last week.

Cloud County (Kan.) CC’s men’s team moved to 5th, joining the top-5 for the 1st time this season. The rise in the rankings comes just after Rajindra Campbell posted the nation’s 3rd-best discus throw on the year at 56.79m (186-4) at the Fort Hays State Open.

Hinds (Miss.) CC’s men’s squad had the biggest rise in the top-10 on the week, climbing from 9th to 7th after USTFCCCA NJCAA Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week Keitavious Walter had a week to remember. The freshman from Ruston, Louisiana, ran the fastest 200 meter time in all of collegiate track & field this past week at the Southern Miss Open with a wind-legal time of 20.43 to shoot to the top of the descending order list. He also ran a 10.21 in the 100 meters, good for 4th in NJCAA Division I on the year.

South Plains (Texas) (2nd), Barton (Kan.) CC (3rd), Butler (Kan.) CC (4th) and Coffeyville (Kan.) CC (10th) remained in their same spot from a week ago on the men’s side, while Paradise Valley (Ariz.) CC (6th), Central Arizona (8th) and Western Texas (9th) each fell one spot.

Following New Mexico JC in the top-10 on the women’s side were the same 7 teams from a week ago: Iowa Central CC, South Plains (Texas), Central Arizona, Iowa Western (CC), Barton (Kan.) CC, Monroe (N.Y.) and Western Texas.

Coffeyville (Kan.) CC jumped to 9th ahead of Mesa (Ariz.) CC – who fell 1 spot – after 3 top-10 descending order list performances at the MSSU Bill Williams/Bob Laptad Invite. It was there where Kalei Matthews (54.65 in the 400 meters) and Tiffaney Johnson (47.71m/156-6 in the hammer throw) ranked 7th and 9th, respectively, on the descending order lists for their performances. Additionally, the Red Ravens’ 4×100 relay team posted the 6th-best mark in the nation on the year at 45.87.

Hinds (Miss.) CC’s women’s team made the biggest jump in the rankings, regardless of gender, as the team rose 9 spots to 19th, tying for the program’s highest ranking on the women’s side.

The 2017 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held in Hutchinson, Kansas, on May 14-16. Check back at www.USTFCCCA.org each week throughout the season for updated rankings.
