CONVENTION: Harry Marra Wins George Dales Award
PHOENIX – Harry Marra is this year’s recipient of the George Dales Award. Marra was honored Wednesday night prior to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the 2017 USTFCCCA Convention at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.
The George Dales Award is named in honor of longtime Western Michigan coach George Dales for his relentless pursuit in the growth and development of cross country and track & field over more than half of a century. This award is presented annually to an individual who, like Dales, enhanced the profession of coaching cross country and track & field.
Dales unfortunately passed away in late September at the age of 96. He had been at just about every Convention since the award’s inception in 2006 to help present the honor.
Although Marra may well be best known for being one of the founders of the USA/VISA Decathlon Program alongside 2017 USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame inductee Fred Samara and coaching the combined event duo of Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen-Eaton to greatness, his passion for teaching and coaching coaches is unrivaled. Marra has more than 30 years of coaching experience and taught numerous combined event clinics for high school, college and professional coaches (most recently last month).
Honors have poured in for Marra during his career, too, as he was named the IAAF World Coach of the Year in 2016 and Nike USA Coach of the Year in 2012.
