Weekend Recap: Alekna Adds Marks To Record Book In Debut

Mykolas Alekna is rewriting the collegiate record book – one majestic throw at a time.

Alekna, already the collegiate record-holder in the discus with his 68.73m (225-6) effort last year at the Pac-12 Outdoor Championships, added two more all-time top-5 marks in his season opener on Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational.

The California standout launched the platter 67.88m (222-9) on his second attempt of the competition, which was the second-farthest mark in collegiate history at the time. Then, Alekna hurled the disc 68.39m (224-5) to push that previous effort to No. 3 with the new one coming in at No. 2, 34cm off his all-time collegiate best.

Prior to last year, no collegiate athlete had topped Hannes Hopley’s 67.66m (222-0) marker from 2004. Well, Hopley’s former collegiate record is now No. 5 on the all-time chart behind four bombs by Alekna.

Charamba Runs Into The Record Book

Makanakaishe Charamba of Carson-Newman launched himself to the top of the DII leaderboards in the 200 this weekend, and etched his name into the DII all-time lists once more at the same time. The sophomore standout for the Eagles took to the Tennessee Invite this weekend, dropping a monster 20.49w. This vaults him into first in DII, and represents his third mark on the DII all-conditions all-time list, after a 20.41w and a 20.44w effort, both run at outdoor nationals last year.

Spence Shines At David Noble Relays

Angelo State’s Marcia Spence showed the true meaning of a multi athlete this weekend at the David Noble Relays. The junior competed in the heptathlon this weekend, after placing 5th at outdoor DII nationals last year, dropping a massive 5513, good enough for 19th all-time in DII. In addition to this nearly 150 point personal best, Spence added a 40.63m (133-4) personal best individual javelin effort, a 12.38m (40-7 1/2) shotput effort, and a 1:03.73 400m hurdles effort, all of which were good enough for a top-7 placement at the meet.
