Collegiate Record: Katelyn Tuohy Adds Outdoor 5000 Best To Her Ledger

Make it FOUR collegiate records for Katelyn Tuohy this year.

Tuohy, competing at the Sound Running Track Fest on Saturday night, took down Jenny Simpson’s collegiate outdoor record in the 5000 meters with her 15:03.12 clocking in Walnut, California. Simpson (nee Barringer) still holds the absolute collegiate record at 15:01.70, a mark she ran indoors during her Bowerman-winning campaign.

Jenny, it’s nothing personal, but Tuohy has now demoted three of your collegiate records to No. 2 in collegiate history: Tuohy went 4:24.46 – with an en route 4:06.49 split at 1500 meters in late January to surpass the 14-year-old indoor mile best; now Tuohy made quick work of the outdoor 12½-lap standard and nearly hit the world standard in the process.

Tuohy’s other collegiate record came at the 115th Millrose Games in mid-February when she turned 3000 meters in 8:35.20.

The NC State phenom mentioned to the media after the race that she plans to contest the 1500 meters in the upcoming NCAA postseason. Want to know THAT collegiate record? 3:59.90, turned in by none other than Simpson at the Pre Classic in 2009.
