Collegiate Athletes Continue To Shine Globally
Remember that whole “Collegiate athletes are worn down by the end of the season” trope?
Yeah. About that.
Collegiate track & field standouts continue to star nearly six weeks after the conclusion of the NCAA DI Outdoor Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday, June 10 in Austin, Texas.
Let’s look at what happened this past weekend.
No. Way. Brian. Fay.
(We’re borrowing the headline from Washington’s Twitter account for good reason.)
Brian Fay set a huge PR over 5000 meters and moved up several all-time charts.
Fay, competing at the Night of Athletics Meet in Heusden, Belgium, turned 12½ laps in 13:01.40 to set an Irish national record, move up to No. 2 on the all-time, all-dates collegiate chart and secure a World Championships standard. That was PR by more than 15 seconds for Fay!
The former Washington star is now the second-fastest collegiate athlete within the confines of the global track & field year. Only Lawi Lalang ran faster than Fay ten years ago, when he went 13:00.95 at the Diamond League Herculis Meeting in Monaco. Lalang had quite the summer in 2013, clocking the No. 1 and now No. 5 performances on the all-time, all-dates chart.
