Men’s Recap
Pittsburg State literally jumped both Grand Valley State and Adams State for the team title on Saturday.
Tre Betts and Treyvon Ferguson finished first and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump for the host Gorillas, which added 13 big points to their total in a tight team race. Pittsburg State had sat third in the team standings behind both the Lakers and the Grizzlies at that juncture, but those results sent the hosts into the lead with 59 points going into the 4×400 relay.
Prior to those points being added to the scoreboard, Adams State received eight points from Miguel Coca in the penultimate 3000 meters. Coca, who also finished runner-up in the mile earlier, was agonizingly close to winning the national title – 0.24 seconds, to be exact. That put the Grizzlies up to 55, which was 3.5 more points than Grand Valley State.
Pittsburg State slammed the door shut on the competition, winning the 4×400 relay in a 3:09.78 SB. The Lakers finished fourth in the relay to overtake Adams State for second place in the team standings.
Women’s Recap
Gracie Hyde and Brianna Robles made all the difference for Adams State.
Hyde and Robles went 1-3 in the penultimate 3000 meters to vault the Grizzlies ahead of host Pittsburg State for the team title. Prior to the race, Adams State sat second with 51 points, 10.5 behind the Gorillas. Then, Hyde completed her mile-3000 double and Robles added a third-place finish in that event to go along with a runner-up effort in the 5000 meters. If you’re counting at home, that’s 38 points alone from Hyde and Robles.
Pittsburg State put on a masterclass in the field events. The Gorillas scored 45.5 of their XX points between the pentathlon (14), triple jump (14), high jump (11.5) and pole vault (six). Blakelee Winn topped the podium in the pentathlon, Erica Schamel reigned in the high jump, while Auna Childress and Taylor Nelloms went 2-3 in the triple jump.
Minnesota State finished third and made some history. Denisha Cartwright, Adeyah Brewster and Roxan Foster went 1-2-3 in the 60-meter hurdles for a clean sweep and 24 points. Cartwright also finished runner-up in the 60, fourth in the 200, and anchored the Mavericks’ 4×400 relay to end the meet.
