The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.

Men’s Story

Good luck catching UW-La Crosse.

The Eagles recently soared to an indoor title and when added to their runner-up finish in cross country, that gives them just three POY points. UW-La Crosse is a four-time winner of the Al Carius Men’s Program of the Year award with its last coming in 2017. That was part of a run of four in five years for the Eagles.

UW-Whitewater sits second after two NCAA Championships with 14 POY points. The Warhawks improved from tenth in cross country to fourth indoors. UW-Whitewater hasn’t finished among the top-3 programs in the final POY standings in award history.

Cross country champion Pomona-Pitzer is third with 15.5 POY points, one point ahead of Lynchburg in fourth with 16.5 points. The Sagehens recently finished in a tie for 14th place indoors, while the Hornets were ninth in cross country and tied for seventh indoors.

Williams, with its 22.5 POY points, rounds out the top-5 in this update.

Women’s Story

It all comes down to the outdoor season.

The top-4 programs are all separated by just 2.5 POY points in the race to be named Deb Vercauteren Women’s Program of the Year.

UChicago headlines the group with 13.5 POY points. The Maroons were third in cross country and tied for tenth place indoors. UChicago tied for second in the final POY standings last year.

Johns Hopkins and Washington (Mo.) are tied for second with 15 POY points. The Blue Jays and Bears finished one spot apart from each other in both cross country (12th and 13th, respectively) and indoor track & field (third and second, respectively). Either Johns Hopkins or WashU have won each of the past six awards bestowed with the Bears as the most recent winner in 2023.

MIT is a close fourth with 16 POY points, followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in fifth with 18.5 points. The Engineers have won this award twice with the last coming in 2015.
