Liam Murphy, Brynn King, And Ishmael Kipkurui All Set Collegiate Records
March isn’t even over.
Three collegiate records in championship events fell.
From The USTFCCCA InfoZone: Records & Lists
That’s this past weekend. Not so far this outdoor season.
Let’s take a look at them chronologically.
Murphy Leads Three Under 1500-Meter Best
It was only a matter of time.
Three minutes, 33.02 seconds, to be exact.
Liam Murphy and Co. continued their absolute siege on the collegiate record book on Thursday at the Raleigh Relays. Murphy shattered the outdoor – and absolute collegiate record – in the 1500 meters with his 3:33.02 clocking in the Tar Heel State. The Villanova standout led two other men under the old standard of 3:33.74 set by Eliud Kipsang of Alabama back in 2012: teammate Marco Langon in 3:33.38 and Gary Martin of Virginia in 3:33.71.
With a pacer and pace lights leading the way, Murphy covered the first 300 meters in 43.41, the next 400 meters in 58.38, the next lap in 57.06 and then closed in 54.18 to etch his name into the collegiate record book. That means Murphy traversed the final 800 meters in 1:51.24.
Fun fact: Murphy also took down the Villanova in-season program record, which had stood for 44 years. Whose record was it? Sydney Maree, who set a longstanding CR of 3:35.30 back in 1981. Maree has now been knocked out of the all-time collegiate top-10 completely after yesterday’s result.
King Vaults To CR In Austin
Brynn King probably couldn’t wait to compete at the Texas Relays.
Pole vaulters love the favorable winds at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin and King would be returning home to the Lone Star State (King is from The Woodlands, which is right outside of Houston).
King felt right at home and kicked her feet up to a collegiate record. The Roberts Wesleyan standout cleared 4.75m (15-7) on her second attempt at the height in the Pole Vault Women’s University Elite and took down a five-year-old best set by Olivia Gruver.
Already on the all-time indoor and outdoor collegiate chart from previous performances, King didn’t waste any time this past Saturday. King topped 4.37m (14-4) and 4.57m (15-0) on her first attempt and then went right to 4.75m (15-7).
Both the indoor and outdoor collegiate records have now fallen in the event.
Kipkurui, Others Shine At The Ten
They don’t call the Ten the “World’s Fastest 10,000m” for nothing.
You can also say it’s where the event’s collegiate record goes to die.
Just one year after Nico Young set the CR at the same meet, New Mexico phenom Ishmael Kipkurui demoted Young to second best and then teammate Habtom Samuel pushed the former Northern Arizona standout to third. Kipkurui turned 25 laps in 26:50.21 with Samuel hot on his heels in 26:51.06 to both go under Young’s former CR of 26:52.72.
Kipkurui and Samuel weren’t the only collegians putting a dent in the collegiate record book. BYU standout Casey Clinger and Oklahoma State standout Denis Kipngetich went 27:11.00 and 27:20.10 to become the fifth- and sixth-fastest men in collegiate history.
In the women’s race, New Mexico standout Pamela Kosgei clocked 31:02.73 for the second-fastest performance in collegiate history behind 2024 The Bowerman winner Parker Valby’s 30:50.43 CR.
