Collegiate Throwers Leaving Their Mark On The Outdoor Record Book
Look out below!
This outdoor season has belonged to the throwers.
We’ve seen a collegian set a world record in the discus, multiple women crack the all-time top-five in both the discus and javelin, and the farthest hammer throw in more than 20 years.
From The USTFCCCA InfoZone: Meets & Results | Records & Lists
That world record belongs to Mykolas Alekna, as you probably already know. Alekan whirled the platter an astonishing 75.56m (247-11) in favorable conditions last month at the Oklahoma Throws World Series Invitational. That field series also included a 74.89m (245-8) howitzer that Alekna threw earlier in the competition to originally better his own world record set last year.
Don’t forget about Ralford Mullings, though. Mullings moved up to No. 2 in collegiate history in the discus with his 69.13m (226-10) effort in late March at the Texas Relays. The Oklahoma standout strung together a foul-free field series and hit 68.16m (223-7) one attempt before his now personal best.
Let’s stay with the discus, because that’s where you’ll find both Jayden Ulrich and Erika Beistle among the top-five athletes in collegiate history. Ulrich sits No. 2 behind Jordine van Klinken after the former launched the disc 69.39m (227-8) at the aforementioned Oklahoma Throws World Series Invitational. Three spots down is where you’ll find Beistle, a standout from NCAA DII Grand Valley State. Beistle let it fly 66.63m (218-7) in early April at the GVSU Early Meet.
If you like multiple current athletes in the top-five, how about two in the top-three? Cast your gaze on the women’s javelin, where Georgia teammates Manuela Rotundo and Lianna Davidson come in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Davidson had been No. 2 behind Rhema Otabor after her 63.79m (209-4) marker in late March at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, but Rotundo one-upped her by more than one foot with her 64.17m (210-7) PR two weeks later.
Angelos Mantzouranis went to the unheralded Meet of the UnSaintly earlier this week and put his name among the best in collegiate history in the hammer. Mantzouranis sent the implement 78.61m (257-11) to become the third best performer in collegiate history behind the legendary Balazs Kiss and Andras Haklits. No one had thrown farther than Mantzouranis since Haklits in 2002.
Want to know the crazy thing? We still have more than one month left in the season.
