CONVENTION NEWS: Spy Coaching Symposiums Are Back In 2025

Following consecutive years of resounding success, the USTFCCCA is excited to continue its highly engaging technical symposiums this December in Grapevine, Texas.

Coaches attending the 2025 USTFCCCA Convention at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center will have the chance to choose from three unique sessions, each designed to focus on strength training and related disciplines, rather than traditional event-specific instruction.
Here are the sessions that will be offered in 2025, scheduled from 6:15-8 pm on Monday, December 15.
Spy Coaching Weight Training
Presenter: Mike Gattone, USA Weightlifting
In this session, you’ll be able to watch legendary weightlifting coach Mike Gattone of USA Weightlifting take athletes through teaching progressions in the key weightlifting exercises. You’ll be able to watch and hear Mike take athletes through teaching progressions for the Olympic lifts, squat movements, press movements, and all of the common exercises used in strength programming for track and field. You’ll hear the cues he uses as he engages in error corrections, and you’ll be able to see how he handles the technical problems you face with your athletes in the weight room.
Spy Coaching Circuit Training
Presenter: Seth Henson, University of Oregon
In this session, you’ll be able to watch as veteran coach Seth Henson of Oregon takes athletes through a wide assortment of circuit training regimens. You’ll be able to watch and hear Seth take athletes through general strength circuits and medicine ball circuits of various types designed to train fitness, improve mechanics, and provide a huge buffer against injury. You’ll hear the cues he uses as he engages in technical teaching, the error corrections he makes, and the advice he gives for implementing circuit programming into your program.
Spy Coaching Plyometrics
Presenter: Jim VanHootegem, University of Houston
In this session, you’ll be able to watch as veteran jumps coach Jim VanHootegem of Houston takes athletes through teaching progressions in a variety of plyometric exercises. You’ll be able to watch and hear Jim take athletes through teaching progressions for a variety of different plyometric exercises for all of the speed and power events, including jump circuits, short bounds, remedial bounds, box jumping routines, and more. You’ll hear the cues he uses as he engages in error corrections, and you’ll be able to see how he handles common technical problems coaches and athletes face.
