Men’s 10k Recap

If it ain’t broke…

Adams State stuck with the same strategy it used against Colo. School of Mines at the RMAC Championships – and once again, it paid off at the South Central Region Championships. The second-ranked Grizzlies went out hard to seize an early lead, held strong through the middle stages, and withstood a late push by the third-ranked Orediggers to prevail, 50-62. This is Adams State’s first regional title since 2017, snapping a streak of six consecutive crowns by Colo. School of Mines.

At the 3k split, the Grizzlies had as few as 18 points and led the Orediggers by as many as 52 before the margin narrowed in the final stretch. Kidus Begashaw and Julian Campos led the charge in second and third, respectively, behind individual champion Weldon Chebon of New Mexico Highlands, with two more teammates finishing in the top 15.– a key buffer as Colo. School of Mines placed all five scorers in the top 20, including four in the top 15.

No. 8 Western Colorado captured the region’s third automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships with its 75-point effort. No. 6 Colorado Christian and No. 12 West Texas A&M must rely on at-large bids after finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Women’s 6k Recap

When Tristian Spence and Ava O’Connor are at their best, Adams State is tough to beat. Then again, the Grizzlies are always a force at the South Central Region Championships, having now claimed 14 straight titles.

Spence and O’Connor went 1-2 to lead No. 2 Adams State to a decisive 42-74 victory over No. 3 UC-Colorado Springs. Top-ranked Colo. School of Mines, fresh off its first RMAC title in program history, finished third to earn the final automatic qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships.

The Grizzlies trailed the Orediggers by three points at the 1k split before surging ahead to lead by as many as 42 at 3k. Adams State continued to press, while the Mountain Lions rallied to clip Colo. School of Mines in the final 1k.

No. 8 Western Colorado and No. 4 West Texas A&M finished fourth and fifth in the team standings and must rely on an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
