Collegiate Record: Jane Hedengren Obliterates Indoor 5000-Meter Mark

It was only a matter of time.

Fourteen minutes and 44.79 seconds, to be exact.

BYU freshman phenom Jane Hedengren smashed Doris Lemgnole’s indoor collegiate record in the 5000 meters on Saturday at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston. Hedengren turned 25 laps of the 200-meter oval in 14:44.79 to trim off nearly eight seconds from Lemngole’s year-old standard, become the first collegiate to go sub-14:50, and move up to No. 2 in American history.

Hedengren went out quick with the pacers, hitting 1000 meters in 2:59.43 and 2000 meters in 6:01.52. By 3000 meters, it was just Hedengren and New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei left in the lead pack, running nearly 11 seconds ahead of the stragglers. Then Hedengren dropped the hammer and put eight seconds between herself and Kosgei from 3200 meters and 4200 meters.

Riley Chamberlain eventually passed Kosgei for second in 14:58.97 to give the Cougars two runners under 15 minutes in the same race. Chamberlain is now ranked sixth in collegiate history behind Hedengren, Lemngole, Parker Valby, Hilda Olemomoi, and former teammate Lexy Halladay-Lowry.
