Haverford, MIT are Coaches’ Favorites Heading into DIII National Championships
NEW ORLEANS – A competitive regional championship weekend in Division III yielded an interesting final regular-season national poll. According to the voting panel of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), Haverford’s men and MIT’s women are the top teams in the country heading into Saturday’s NCAA Championships, but the first-place votes were split among other teams.

NCAA Division III Championship History
Haverford has held the top men’s spot for the last three weeks and sailed to a third-consecutive Mideast regional crown on Saturday. The Fords placed second at last year’s national championships and were the champs in 2010. Haverford was placed first on four of eight ballots.
North Central (Ill.), the defending national champion, is the No. 2 men’s team and garnered two FPVs. The Cardinals won their 25th regional title in school history this past weekend and are looking to win their third national crown over a four year period. NCC has won 14 NCAA cross country national titles.
At No. 3, Calvin holds the other two first-place votes. The Knights won a 17th-straight region title and they will be making their 28th-consecutive NCAA appearance. Calvin finished 11th at last year’s championships, but won national crowns in 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2006.
The women’s top 35 is led by MIT and their five first-place votes. The Engineers have been ranked No. 1 for four weeks and are looking to win their first NCAA cross country national crown. MIT will make only their fifth national-championship appearance and claimed their best finish in school history (third) in 2010.
Johns Hopkins at No. 2 will also be a chasing their first national title, having previously finished as high as seventh in 2009 and 2010.
No. 3 Williams is making their 20th-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. They were winners of the national crown in 2002 and 2004.
Washington (Mo.) will not be defending their national title as they did not make the championship field.
Rose-Hulman will host the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships from the LaVerne Gibson Cross Country Course outside of Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday. The men’s 8k race is slated for 11 a.m., eastern, while the women’s 6k will go off at Noon, eastern. NCAA.com will broadcast the national championships live.
